WHAT IS THIS?
A 24-year-old woman with a history of sickle cell disease had right hip pain after falling. When a CT scan of the head and radiographs of the hip and the thoracic and lumbar spine proved unremarkable, a bone scan was performed. What might account for the diffuse uptake it showed throughout the skull? See the Teaching Case Study on page 245 for the answer.
