Jan M. Winn, MEd, RT(N), CNMT, Executive Director, JRCNMT

The JRCNMT held its spring meeting April 27–28 in Dallas, TX. Programs undergoing review were published in the March 2007 issue of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine Technology. A report on the spring meeting will be published in the September issue.

ANNUAL JRCNMT WORKSHOP

The annual JRCNMT workshop will be held June 2 as part of the Educator's Forum at the SNM Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

UPDATED GUIDELINES FOR THE ESSENTIALS

In 2005 the JRCNMT Board of Directors (BOD) began drafting guidelines to clarify two areas within the Essentials and Guidelines for an Accredited Educational Program for the Nuclear Medicine Technologist. The draft guidelines for Essential I.B. were presented to stakeholders for review and input at the JRCNMT Forum in June 2006 at the SNM Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA. Input was incorporated into the drafts, which were finalized and approved by the BOD in November 2006. The final version of the additional guidelines for Essential I.B. are as follows:Guideline for Essential I. B. Uniform Clinical EducationPrograms could use the master rotation schedule to help with the documentation. This could include a list of the clinical sites where students would receive general nuclear medicine, cardiac, PET, radiopharmacy, and/or radiation safety training. The list or chart would clearly identify what clinical education objectives (procedures) could be achieved and how long the students would be assigned to each of the different clinical sites. For programs where the students do not rotate to different clinical education sites, the program could also use a rotation schedule that demonstrates the weeks assigned in each room or area, what clinical education objectives (procedures) the student is expected to perform while in that area, and who would be supervising them during that time.In addition to the rotation schedule, the program could use an educational objective checklist that would demonstrate what the student had accomplished throughout his/her clinical education. The checklist could include mandatory and elective objectives. The combination of the rotation schedule and the terminal objectives could be used to document the clinical uniformity for students in an individual program.Guideline for Essential I. B. JRCNMT Advisory CommitteeThe word “formal” can be used in the sense that there needs to be a meeting of representatives from each affiliated institution. This meeting can be done in the traditional sense where there is a face-to-face meeting or chat room, a threaded discussion or a telephone conference call. The idea is to have a situation where there can be an immediate or near immediate exchange of ideas. This would satisfy one of the semi-annual meetings.Alternative methodologies include sending out or posting an e-mail newsletter, or a series of e-mails, a hard copy newsletter or some type of bulletin that includes all the information that you would normally have discussed in a formal meeting. There would also have to be a mechanism in place for the representatives to reply back to this information. This could be accomplished by the sites mailing or emailing comments back to the program. This would allow for the sites to provide input on the information that was distributed. If there was a topic that needed to be voted on by all representatives, then a ballot could be distributed to all sites asking for them to complete the ballot and return it to the program. This could satisfy the other meeting.Programs could choose to have one meeting in each manner described above or could choose to continue to have face-to-face meetings. Minutes for each meeting, regardless of format, must be kept.

LIST OF ACCREDITED NUCLEAR MEDICINE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS

An updated list of accredited nuclear medicine technology programs follows. The list is updated after each board meeting. The list is also available online at www.jrcnmt.org.

The directory of accredited programs below identifies those programs that have met or exceeded the Essentials and Guidelines for an Accredited Educational Program for the Nuclear Medicine Technologist. These programs have voluntarily undergone a peer review process established by the JRCNMT. Programmatic accreditation by the JRCNMT provides assurance to applicants that the program provides education and training based on professional standards.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Length

The professional portion of the program is one to two years in length. Institutions offering accredited programs may provide an integrated educational sequence leading to an associate or baccalaureate degree over a period of two or four years.

Programs vary in length depending on the admission criteria. Some programs admit students directly from high school; others require prior education for entrance. The attached list identifies the entrance requirements for each program. “1” indicates programs that require applicants to possess a high school diploma or equivalent. “2” indicates programs that require applicants to have some postsecondary academic courses. “3” indicates programs that require applicants to have prior training in an allied health profession such as radiologic technology, medical technology, nursing, etc. “4” indicates programs that require applicants to have a baccalaureate degree with specific postsecondary courses.

Prerequisites

Applicants for admission must have graduated from high school or the equivalent and have acquired postsecondary competencies in human anatomy and physiology, physics, algebra, medical terminology, computer applications, oral and written communications, and general chemistry.

Curriculum

The curriculum includes methods of patient care, statistics, nuclear medicine/radiation physics, radiation biology, radiation safety and protection, radionuclide chemistry and radiopharmacy, nuclear instrumentation, positron emission tomography (PET), computer applications for nuclear medicine, diagnostic nuclear medicine imaging, non-imaging in-vivo and in-vitro procedures, immunology as related to nuclear medicine, radionuclide therapy, and quality control and quality assurance.

Standards

The Essentials are minimum educational standards adopted by the collaborating organizations. Each new program is assessed in accordance with the Essentials, and accredited programs are periodically reviewed to determine whether they remain in substantial compliance. The Essentials and Guidelines publication is available upon written request from the JRCNMT or at www.jrcnmt.org.
