The NMTCB Board of Directors met at the beginning of March and decisions were made regarding changes to the Attestation and Statement of Certificant and/or Applicant on the renewal form and/or the applications for examinations. The board also decided to make changes to the format of the member registration cards.
The board discussed member concerns regarding the NMTCB's intent in the first paragraph of the Attestation and Statement of Certificant and/or Applicant on the renewal form for the applications for examinations. The board voted to change the wording to include, “In the assessment of a possible disciplinary action, the NMTCB reserves the right to require, and the certificant agrees to undergo, at the certificant's expense, a national criminal background check through a source and under conditions determined by the NMTCB.” The board believes this wording change will help alleviate the concerns expressed by individuals regarding when background checks would be performed. The renewal form will contain 3 ethics questions related to the disciplinary policy, and they will-be answered with a “yes” or “no.” The form will be considered incomplete and will be returned to the certificant, if the certificant does not answer the ethics questions. Once the questions have been answered, the certificant will return the form to the NMTCB office for processing.
The wording on the NMTCB registration card is also changing. The 2006 registration card confirms that the certificant “is a certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist in good standing.” The new cards will contain the terms “Active in Good Standing” or “Active.” This change is due in part to the new NMTCB continuing education policy. The board decided to differentiate between a certificant who has met all the requirements for renewal and a certificant who is on probation. “Active in Good Standing,” will identify a individual as a certificant who has remained in good standing with the NMTCB throughout the last renewal period. A certificant who is “Active” is on probation for a specified reason, and therefore is not in good standing. Once it has been decided that the certificant has satisfied all the requirements of his/her probation, a new registration card will be issued to the certificant with the terminology “Active in Good Standing” printed on the card.
The NMTCB office and board members have received requests from certificants, employers and different regulatory agencies to be able to verify a certificant's status on the Internet. Following discussion, the board decided to have the NMTCB office move forward with this request. When online membership verification is available, the information will be posted on the NMTCB web site.
Next PET and Nuclear Cardiology Exams
Applications to sit for the PET Specialty exam and the Nuclear Cardiology Specialty exam have been processed. The next administration of the PET exam is scheduled to take place on September 30, 2006. The next administration of the Nuclear Cardiology Specialty exam is scheduled for October 7, 2006. Applicants for these exams can find a detailed content outline for each exam on the NMTCB Web site under the Specialty Exam tab.
Due to conflict of interest issues, the NMTCB cannot recommend study aids or educational programs for any of our examinations. I want to encourage applicants to use the content outlines as guides when preparing for these exams.
During the spring meeting the board voted to proceed with the development of a specialty exam for the graduates of the nuclear medicine advanced practice programs. The NMTCB will begin the preliminary work on this exam over the summer.
