The growth and success of the Technologist Section rely on the continuous dedication of volunteer technologists willing to participate at all levels of the organization to support its current goals and objectives. For many years, these unsung heroes worked tirelessly to create scientific and educational programs, develop publications, and write essential guidelines for regulatory compliance and scope of practice, and the list of accomplishments goes on. In the early 1990s, there was a growing desire to recognize these individuals, and the work that followed developed into what today is called fellow status in the Technologist Section. A fellow is an individual who has demonstrated leadership and has made a significant contribution to the profession of nuclear medicine technology at the national level.
Because fellow was defined as a new member category, it required a bylaw change and the approval of the national council and the full membership. The resolution, drafted by the Technologist Section fellow task force and reviewed by the membership committee, was approved by the national council and the full membership in 1993.
In 1994, the first fellow application was made available. In the application, the technologist provides a comprehensive listing of professional activities and accomplishments, and a point value system is assigned for each area. The applicant must meet the minimum point requirements in each section to be considered for fellow status. There are 5 sections in the application. Section 1 records the technologist’s elected and appointed activities at the national and chapter levels, and this section carries the most weight in terms of points. In sections 2 through 4, an equal number of points can be earned for each section. Section 2 records the education of the technologist, including all professional certifications acquired. Section 3 assesses professional experience, and points are assigned for the various levels of work experience (e.g., manager and staff technologist) or the number of years of full-time-equivalent work in related nuclear medicine areas, including research, sales, and applications training. Section 4 records the professional contributions made by the technologist, including lectures and publications. Points are also assigned for other outstanding achievements and for scientific exhibits or papers presented at the national meeting. Section 5 incorporates the civic activities of the applicant (volunteer activities, elected or appointed public office positions, and public service awards). A total of 100 points is required for consideration of fellow status.
The first class of fellows was awarded in 1995, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Technologist Section. Through the actions of the national council, the rules requiring completion of the application and normal processing were waived, and the first 25 Technologist Section presidents were awarded fellow status. In addition, 1 technologist, Denise A. Merlino, submitted an application for fellow status that surpassed the minimum requirements and was approved. Therefore, at the 25th anniversary celebration, 26 fellows were recognized for their dedicated service to the Technologist Section.
Today, 104 technologists have been recognized for their leadership in the organization and for their significant contribution to the profession of nuclear medicine technology at the national level. These technologists proudly display their fellow status with “FSNMTS” or “FSNMMITS” following their academic and professional credentials. The technologists awarded fellow status are listed below.
