The list of accredited programs identifies those programs that have met or exceeded the Essentials and Guidelines for an Accredited Educational Program for the Nuclear Medicine Technologist. These programs have voluntarily undergone a peer-review process established by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT). Programmatic accreditation by the JRCNMT provides assurance to applicants that the program provides education and training based on professional standards.
Programs vary in length depending on the admission criteria. Some programs admit students directly from high school; others require prior education for entry. The following list identifies the entrance requirements for each program. A number 1 indicates programs that require applicants to possess a high school diploma or equivalent. A number 2 indicates programs that require applicants to have some postsecondary academic courses. A number 3 indicates programs that require applicants to have prior training in an allied health profession such as radiologic technology, medical technology, nursing, etc. A number 4 indicates programs that require applicants to have a baccalaureate degree with specific postsecondary courses.
We suggest you contact one of the programs in your area for further information. You will find any of the identified persons willing to answer any specific questions. You may also request a visit to a nuclear medicine department to help you understand the responsibilities of a nuclear medicine technologist more fully.
We would encourage your interest in the field of nuclear medicine technology that encompasses both diagnosis and treatment of disease. Nuclear medicine technology requires highly developed skills and precise administration of patient treatment.
We wish you every success in your pursuit of a career in nuclear medicine technology.
HISTORY
The Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology was formed by the Society of Nuclear Medicine, Society of Nuclear Medical Technologists, American College of Radiology, American Society of Clinical Pathologists, American Society for Medical Technology, and American Society of Radiologic Technologists. The first meeting of the Joint Review Committee was held in January 1970.
The Society of Nuclear Medical Technologists, one of the original sponsors, terminated its corporate status as a professional organization in 1975. The American Society for Medical Technology and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists relinquished sponsorship in 1994. Current representation of collaborating sponsors on the Review Committee includes two public members and three members appointed from each of the following organizations: the American College of Radiology, American Society of Radiologic Technologists, Society of Nuclear Medicine, and Society of Nuclear Medicine-Technologist Section. The current sponsorship maintains a balance between physicians and technologists.
The responsibilities of the Joint Review Committee include coordinating the preparation and revision of educational standards for adoption by collaborating organizations and conducting program reviews. The Committee meets twice annually to review educational programs and determine accreditation status.
The first Essentials and Guidelines for an Accredited Educational Program for the Nuclear Medicine Technologist were adopted by the collaborating organizations in 1969. The Essentials were substantially revised in 1976, 1984, 1991, and 1997.
OCCUPATIONAL DESCRIPTION
Nuclear medicine is the medical specialty that utilizes the nuclear properties of radioactive and stable nuclides to make diagnostic evaluations of the anatomic or physiologic conditions of the body and to provide therapy with unsealed radioactive sources. The skills of the nuclear medicine technologist complement those of the nuclear medicine physician and of other professionals in the field.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Nuclear medicine technologists perform several tasks in the areas of patient care, technical skills, and administration. When caring for patients, they acquire adequate knowledge of the patients’ medical histories to understand and relate to their illnesses and pending diagnostic procedures for therapy, instruct patients before and during procedures, evaluate the satisfactory preparation of patients before commencing a procedure, and recognize emergency patient conditions and initiate life-saving first aid when appropriate.
Nuclear medicine technologists apply their knowledge of radiation physics and safety regulations to limit radiation exposure, prepare and administer radiopharmaceuticals, use radiation detection devices and other kinds of laboratory equipment that measure the quantity and distribution of radionuclides deposited in the patient or in a patient specimen, perform in vivo and in vitro diagnostic procedures, use quality control techniques as part of a quality assurance program covering all procedures and products in the laboratory, and participate in research activities.
Administrative functions may include supervising other nuclear medicine technologists, students, laboratory assistants, and other personnel; participating in procuring supplies and equipment; documenting laboratory operations; participating in departmental inspections conducted by various licensing, regulatory, and accrediting agencies; and participating in scheduling patient examinations.
EMPLOYMENT CHARACTERISTICS
The employment outlook in nuclear medicine technology is good. Opportunities may be found in major medical centers, smaller hospitals, and independent imaging centers. Opportunities are also available for obtaining positions in clinical research, education, and administration. Salaries vary depending on the employer and geographic location.
According to the 1995–1996 NMTCB Salary Survey, the median range for salaries was $36,000–$39,999.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Length
The professional portion of the program is 1 y in length. Institutions offering accredited programs may provide an integrated educational sequence leading to an associate or baccalaureate degree over a period of 2 or 4 y.
Prerequisites
Applicants for admission must have graduated from high school or the equivalent and have acquired postsecondary competencies in human anatomy and physiology, physics, mathematics, medical terminology, oral and written communications, chemistry, and medical ethics.
Curriculum
The curriculum includes methods of patient care, radiation safety and protection, nuclear medicine physics and radiation physics, nuclear instrumentation, statistics, radionuclide chemistry and radiopharmacy, radiation biology, diagnostic nuclear medicine imaging and nonimaging in vivo and in vitro procedures, radionuclide therapy, computer applications, immunology as related to nuclear medicine, and quality control and quality assurance.
Standards
Essentials are minimum educational standards adopted by the collaborating organizations. Each new program is assessed in accordance with the Essentials, and accredited programs are periodically reviewed to determine whether they remain in substantial compliance. The Essentials and Guidelines are available on written request from the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology.
ACCREDITATION
The following definitions are used in relation to the accredited status of any program reviewed by the JRCNMT.
Accreditation
Accreditation is granted to an existing or a new program when the accreditation review process confirms that the program is or will be in substantial compliance with the Essentials and Guidelines for an Accredited Educational Program for the Nuclear Medicine Technologist.
Administrative Probationary Accreditation
Administrative probation may be granted when the program does not comply with one or more administrative requirements for maintaining accreditation.
Probationary Accreditation
Probationary accreditation is granted when a program is not in substantial compliance with the Essentials and the deficiencies are so serious that the capability of the program to provide acceptable education is threatened.
Voluntary Accreditation Withdrawn
An institution sponsoring a program may voluntarily withdraw from the JRCNMT accreditation process at any time.
Accreditation Withdrawn
Withdrawing accreditation occurs at the conclusion of the specified period of Probationary Accreditation or Administrative Probationary Accreditation when the accreditation review process confirms that the program is not in substantial compliance with the Essentials or with the requirements for maintaining or administering accreditation.
Accreditation Withheld
Withholding accreditation occurs when a program seeking initial accreditation is not in substantial compliance with the Essentials.
