  • Regional Cardiac Sympathetic Nervous System Evaluation Using 123I-mIBG SPECT in Patients with Heart Failure

2018, Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences
    Citation Excerpt :

Because of a much greater sensitivity of the cardiac SNS to ischemia than myocardial cells, blood supply impairment that is not severe enough to cause myocardial infarction (MI) may cause loss/impairment of cardiac SNS [20,21]. Impairment of the cardiac sympathetic reuptake-1 mechanism has been postulated as a cause of fatal arrhythmias [14,21,22]. Mapping of the SNS of the heart with Iodine-123–labeled mIBG (123I-mIBG) can allow identification of patients who are at risk of SCD [15], independently of LVEF or stage/classification of HF and allow more appropriate management.
