Investigation of thyroid, head, and neck cancers with PET
Section snippets
Diagnosis and staging of papillary and follicular thyroid cancer
Initial reports suggested that FDG-PET may prove useful in characterizing thyroid nodules assuming that malignant lesions have more FDG uptake than benign nodules [1], [2]. It was reported that FDG-PET could detect lymph node metastasis prior to thyroidectomy patients with cancer [3]. Based on the experience gained over the past decade, however, the role of FDG-PET in the diagnosis and initial staging of thyroid cancers seems to be limited. First, thyroid tumors, which are well differentiated
Initial detection of primary tumor and staging
Head and neck cancers mostly consist of squamous cell carcinomas of the nasopharynx, oral cavity, and larynx. Primary head and neck malignancies that do not distort or invade the surrounding tissue structure may not be detectable by conventional imaging techniques. In this population, FDG-PET has an advantage over conventional technique. In addition, accurate assessment of the stage of the disease is essential for the appropriate therapeutic strategies in patients with head and neck cancer. The

Is there a role for fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography in cytologically indeterminate thyroid nodules?
2008, American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and SurgeryCitation Excerpt :In contrast, positron emission tomography (PET) with fluorine 18 (18F)–labeled fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) relies on in vivo measurement of functional alterations of glucose metabolism for tumor detection [13-15]. Prior studies have shown a correlation between a positive FDG-PET/CT and the presence of thyroid carcinoma within thyroid “incidentalomas” and multinodular goiters [2,16-21]. Although these observations suggest a potential role for FDG-PET/CT in the evaluation of thyroid nodules, the use of FDG-PET/CT in the evaluation of cytologically indeterminate lesions has not been systematically investigated to date.
