In response to different cardiac injuries, it has been reported that IL-6 is produced by cardiomyocytes and its concentration increases after myocardial infarction (Rattazzi et al., 2003; Hogye et al., 2004), also, elevated IL-6 serum concentrations have been associated with deterioration of cardiac function in patients with Chagas disease (Lopez et al., 2006; Barbosa-Ferreira et al., 2015; Sanmarco, et al., 2016; Gomez-Olarte, et al., 2019). Several studies have associated IL6 gene polymorphisms with infectious diseases, such as, infection by Trypanosoma brucei (Courtin et al., 2007; Ahouty et al., 2017), Toxoplasma gondii (Wujcicka et al., 2015), Chlamydia trachomatis, and they have been also associated with heart diseases in Chlamidia pneumoniae infections (Almeida et al., 2019).
