2005, NeuropharmacologyCitation Excerpt :It is well established that although the adult brain contains a high density of specific nuclear T3 receptors, in comparison to other T3-target tissues (Valcana and Timiras, 1978), it is also under tight metabolic control, leading thus to the long known hypothesis that this tissue is not responsive to thyroid hormones, at least, in adulthood. However, several reports in the literature have suggested that these hormones affect aspects of the neurotransmission in adult brain (Ito et al., 1977b; Codola and Garsia, 1985). Our present data provide evidence that perturbed neural activity affects many aspects of the molecular mechanism of action of thyroid hormones.
