6Gather supplies: syringe (1 or 3 mL), needle (16, 25, or 38 mm [⅝, 1, or 1½ in]*; 22–25 g), sterile alcohol wipes, adhesive bandages, gauze, and medication label
7Identify administration site: deltoid muscle of upper arm (preferred) or vastus lateralis muscle of anterolateral thigh
  • * For deltoid administration, recommended gauge 22 to 25; for anyone <130 lb or <59 kg, 16–25 mm (5/8 to 1 in) needle, or 130–152 lb or 59–69 kg, 25 mm (1 in) needle; for women 152–200 lb or 69–91 kg or for men 152–260 lb or 69–118 kg, 25–38mm (1 to 1.5 in) needle; for women >200 lb or >91 kg or for men >260 lb or >118 kg, 38 mm or (1.5 in) needle.
